Six-step funding plan

  1. Calculate the full cost

Include tuition, fees, prerequisites, books, uniforms, equipment, testing, health requirements, transportation, parking, childcare, and reduced work hours.

  2. File the FAFSA

Submit the current FAFSA and meet the earliest school and state deadlines. Schools and some other aid providers also use FAFSA information.

  3. Compare aid offers

Separate grants and scholarships from work-study and loans. Compare net cost, renewal rules, enrollment requirements, and conditions.

  4. Search close to home

Ask the school, nursing department, employer, union, community foundations, and professional groups about current opportunities.

  5. Evaluate work-linked service commitments

Some scholarships and loan-repayment programs require employment at an eligible site for a stated period. This is different from ordinary work-study. Read eligibility, service length, approved sites, tax treatment, and default consequences before accepting.

  6. Recheck every term

Track satisfactory academic progress, renewal applications, enrollment changes, and new deadlines instead of assuming aid automatically continues.

Compare funding by what it requires

Grants and scholarships
Usually do not require repayment when all terms are met; verify renewal, enrollment, grade, and use-of-funds rules.
Work-study and employment support
May trade scheduled work or continued employment for income or tuition assistance; check work-hour and repayment policies.
Federal and private loans
Must be repaid under their terms. Compare total borrowing, interest, fees, repayment protections, and when payments begin.
Service-linked programs
May fund education or repay loans in exchange for work at eligible sites. Treat the service contract as a major obligation.
